Six Sigma is a systematic, fact-based problem solving methodology that provides businesses like yours with the tools and skills to reduce variation within their processes and create a corporate culture committed to eliminating waste and product variations.
It is a rigorous, disciplined metric, methodology and management system that focuses on:
• Understanding and meeting customer requirements;
• Aligning key business processes to achieve these requirements;
• Utilizing rigorous data analysis to minimize variations in those processes; and
• Driving rapid and sustainable improvement to business processes.
Today, it is helping large and small companies throughout the world save billions of dollars in non valued added activities and solve problems once considered unsolvable.
One of the major elements of the Six Sigma system is the DMAIC process. This stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control, each of which have a variety of technical and cultural tools that a Six Sigma black belts can use to solve problems, improve productivity and meet customer needs.
Define includes selecting and proposing projects, building a team, creating a sense of urgency and clarifying customer requirements and processes.
Measure means selecting the key indicator of project success, collecting and displaying the necessary data and calculating sigma (a measure of process variations).
In Analyzing, many possible causes are identified, statistical calculations are made to help determine one or more actual root causes and expected results and savings are quantified.
Improve includes using both technical and cultural tools to identify, test, refine and implement a plan of action with effective solutions.
Control means development and deploying systems to make sure that solutions implemented remain effective.
There are three levels of Six Sigma achievement, designated by belt color as in the martial arts. The beginning level is the green belt. The next level of competence is black belt. And, finally, with experience in mentoring and/or training, black belts can earn the Master Black Belt designation.
Six Sigma Greenbelt Training
Six Sigma Greenbelts are important to the success of your organization’s Six Sigma initiative in a variety of ways. They serve on Blackbelt project team; accelerate progress, increase return on investment and add capacity to deliver more breakthrough continuous improvement projects across the company’s operations.
When a project does not require rigorous statistical skill, a Six Sigma Greenbelt is often assigned to manage it.
In this 10-day course, participants learn the DMAIC process through individual and team exercises and projects. In addition, they learn to:
• Function as a “tools application” member of a Six Sigma team;
• Lead and execute process level improvement projects;
• Collect process data and develop process maps;
• Develop statistical hypotheses using simple statistical tools;
• Design simple experiments that help validate improvement options; and
• Work with process owners to ensure process gains are held.
Successful completion of this course requires an individual project and prepares the participant for the ASQ Certified Six Sigma Greenbelt (CSSGB) Exam.
